What we don't know certainly can hurt us
Household Cleaning Chemicals...
What we don't know certainly can hurt us.

Many of us tend to think that what's on the store shelves, must be safe because we assume that it has been tested and meets some type of criteria established by a regulatory agency.  Unfortunately that just isn't true.  In the U.S. there are no legal requirements for listing ingredients on the labels of household cleaning products.  Household chemicals don't come under the jurisdiction of the Food and Drug administration.  The Environmental Protection Agency only regulates pesticides, and the focus of Consumer Product Safety Commission is limited to acute poisoning hazards.

No toxic information is available for more than 80% of the chemicals in everyday-use products. --National Research Council

Product labels, if they list product ingredients at all, can often leave us wondering what we're actually using in our household cleaning routines.  Products that contain chemicals which may be harmful to our health often hide behind vague general terminology.  For example, here are the ingredients listed on a very popular household cleaner:

"Cleaning agents, quality control agents, perfume, colorant, and water"

All we can say to this is "Wow!"
  • There is a staggering number of types and brands of cleaning products available on store shelves.  There really isn't a need for all the specialized cleaners on the market today.  Using them only increases the risk of subjecting ourselves and our families to harmful chemicals.
  • Studies have shown that we spend over 85% of our time indoors.  The EPA reports that indoor air quality is often times much more polluted than outdoor air.  Cleaning products play a role in generating that pollution.
  • In addition to our direct contact with chemicals while cleaning, there are chemical residues left behind and fumes which readily evaporate into the air we breathe.  These fumes can aggravate existing respiratory ailments such as asthma.
  • Asthma is a rapidly growing public health problem.  According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:  About 23 Million people, including 6.8 million children, have asthma.
  • Women suffer from the most exposure to potentially hazardous cleaning chemicals, as studies have shown they do the majority of the household cleaning.
Populations such as children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with allergies and respiratory ailments are particularly vulnerable to household chemicals.  Young children "live on the ground" - crawling on the floor, then putting their hands in their mouth transferring chemical residue.  The Soap & Detergent Agency (SDA) recommends protecting children from cleaning chemical exposure by only cleaning when they are out of the house.  What about the residue left behind?

We just don't know enough...
We use household chemicals to make our lives easier.  But we don't really know the consequences of regular exposure to them.  Are the cleaners we use innocuous?  or are the cleaning products we use actually putting our health at risk?  We routinely expose ourselves to chemicals every week, while very little is known about the impact of long-term exposure, or any possible connection to chronic diseases.  We just don't know enough.
