| Household Cleaning Chemicals... What we don't know certainly can hurt us. Many of us tend to think that what's on the store shelves, must be safe because we assume that it has been tested and meets some type of criteria established by a regulatory agency. Unfortunately that just isn't true. In the U.S. there are no legal requirements for listing ingredients on the labels of household cleaning products. Household chemicals don't come under the jurisdiction of the Food and Drug administration. The Environmental Protection Agency only regulates pesticides, and the focus of Consumer Product Safety Commission is limited to acute poisoning hazards. No toxic information is available for more than 80% of the chemicals in everyday-use products. --National Research Council Product labels, if they list product ingredients at all, can often leave us wondering what we're actually using in our household cleaning routines. Products that contain chemicals which may be harmful to our health often hide behind vague general terminology. For example, here are the ingredients listed on a very popular household cleaner: "Cleaning agents, quality control agents, perfume, colorant, and water" All we can say to this is "Wow!"
We just don't know enough... We use household chemicals to make our lives easier. But we don't really know the consequences of regular exposure to them. Are the cleaners we use innocuous? or are the cleaning products we use actually putting our health at risk? We routinely expose ourselves to chemicals every week, while very little is known about the impact of long-term exposure, or any possible connection to chronic diseases. We just don't know enough.
