Highly Sought-After Floor Cleaning Secrets

December 14, 2017

There are a few cleaning tasks that, when done, make the whole room feel put together – Maybe even the whole house. Personally, I like to keep my floors clean. In fact, I have the kids chip in and sweep after breakfast and dinner to keep the kitchen somewhat clean. (If you saw the quality of their sweeping you’d understand why I said “somewhat”.) Then I do a simple mopping to get rid of the sticky stuff and any leftover gunk.

“Objection! Mopping is NOT simple!” (says the unruly woman in the front row)
I thought you might say that, because clearly you’re not using an e-cloth.  If you had been, you would know that it is! If you’re new to e-cloth, check out what Leslie at Lamberts Lately has to say about this Aqua Spray Deep Clean Mop! Continue reading below to read Leslie’s floor cleaning tips and how e-cloth has saved her from the hassle of traditional floor cleaning.

MY SECRETS TO CLEANING LUXURY VINYL PLANK FLOORING

A huge thanks to ecloth for sponsoring this post.  All opinions of their fabulous products are my own.

In case you didn’t know, it’s Journey to Clean week!  I’ll be releasing the latest version of my popular home cleaning system on Friday.  So, let’s kick off the party by talking about a major way we’ve adapted our cleaning routine for the new home.

The flooring in our custom build is something I was a little particular about choosing correctly.  We’ve lived in quite a few homes (with quite a few different types of flooring) over the years, so I’ve gotten a pretty good idea of what I did and didn’t want.  I definitely didn’t want something that was too glossy (impossible to keep streak-free), too dark (shows every piece of dirt), too light (shows every stain), or that was susceptible to water damage.  With a dog and two kids, we needed something incredibly durable and stain-resistant.

When we lived in our apartment after moving to Mississippi, we fell in love with the luxury vinyl plank flooring that was throughout the common areas.  It was so durable, water-resistant, barely showed stains/dirt, and had a gorgeous matte finish that was super streak-resistant. LVP was the obvious choice for our home, and as soon as our builder presented me with the Majestic Oak color by Artisan Mills, I fell in love.  The color was deep enough to match our color scheme, but not too dark.

So far, we’re loving the quality.  It’s soft underfoot and incredibly water-resistant.  But, with kids and a dog in the house, there are constantly going to be spills/stains/shedding on the floor, so it’s been really important to have a game plan for keeping our LVP clean.  I’ve been using the following method for over a month and it’s working beautifully so far…I thought I’d share it with you guys today!

How to Clean Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring

Daily Cleaning:

I have a robotic vacuum that runs every morning at 8am (on a timer) to keep the pet shedding and dirt to a minimum.  It doesn’t completely eliminate the need for an occasional full vacuuming, but it does help a lot (and is really a low-maintenance way to reduce dirt).  I also spot clean spills and spots with e-cloth’s Aqua Spray Deep Clean Mop.  This product has most definitely become one of my favorite cleaning products in the home.

Look – I’m just not a mop and bucket kind of girl.  If mopping is that complicated, I’m so much less likely to do it.  I’ve used the popular disposable mopping pads in the past, but those get expensive and require you to use their specific chemicals on the floor.  I have a 1-year-old that is constantly touching and crawling around on the floor…I’d prefer to clean our floor without expensive chemicals if possible.

The Aqua Spray Deep Clean Mop solves all of these problems!  The e-cloth mopping pad really grip to my LVP flooring to remove spots with absolute ease.  Unlike other disposable pad mops I’ve used, there’s much less need to scrub the floors to remove stubborn dirt & grime.  I can typically go over a spot once or twice with this mop (with very little elbow grease) and remove any spots on the floor.  If it’s a really stubborn spot that won’t quite come out with a few scrubs, I’ve found it effective to put my foot on top of the e-cloth cleaning pad and really press down into the stain.  I haven’t met a stain yet that didn’t come up with that little bit of effort!   It uses water (yes, just water!) to clean germs from the floor.  With that water, e-cloth has been shown to remove over 99% of bacteria from flooring.  And, once I’m through with mopping, I can simply throw the e-cloth fiber pad in the washer.  It’s guaranteed for 300 machine washes.

The e-cloth Aqua Spray Deep Clean Mop is used multiple times a day around here to keep spots on the floor to a minimum.  I don’t really have a dedicated cleaning task daily for mopping…instead, I just spot clean as needed.

And, as a side note, I’ve started using the e-cloth Kitchen Cleaning Cloths to maintain our granite countertops (along with just general kitchen cleaning) and have been incredibly pleased.  They use the same fiber technology to clean different surfaces in the kitchen without the use of chemicals.  So much better than scrubbing with a paper towel and lots of different chemicals!

Weekly Cleaning:

In Journey to Clean, I detail the need to vacuum once a week…that’s still something I do.  On Thursdays, I vacuum the whole house (yes, even the LVP), which definitely takes longer than it used to.  I usually spend 30-40 minutes vacuuming every floor in our home.  It’s probably the longest any cleaning task takes me during the week, but it’s necessary.  I’m not huge on sweeping, but I do get underneath cabinets and furniture with a broom first.  With any kind of harder flooring, dust has a tendency to settle in those places.

Once I’m through vacuuming, I use the Aqua Spray Deep Clean Mop on the hard surfaces in our home, including the tile in our upstairs bathrooms and the LVP that runs throughout our first floor.  Unlike the spot cleaning I do throughout the week, I get everywhere possible during this run.

Now, let me make a confession: I don’t mop the entire house once a week.  That would take forever.  Instead, I have zones I complete every other week.  Every week, I mop the common living area (including the kitchen and living room), downstairs hall, mudroom, and laundry room.  Those are the areas I’ve found need it weekly.  Every other week, I rotate out: one week I’ll mop the dining room, office, and bedroom, and the other I’ll mop the bathrooms.

I’m sure this will vary for every house.  I recommend not mopping anywhere for a full week to see what gets the most dirty.  Those should be the rooms you hit weekly.  Then, take the remaining areas and divide them into 2 zones to do bi-weekly.

And that’s it!  It’s not a super complicated method for keeping floors clean, but it’s shown to be incredibly effective.

You can check out e-cloth’s full line-up at their website.  e-cloth is now available at your local Ace Hardware too!
